Old meets new at Cellar 152, a wine and gourmet market that in August, 2015 opened in the heart of downtown Elk Rapids, in a building constructed at the turn of the 20th century. The building was renovated to serve as a modern, casual gathering place while preserving the structure’s original design and architecture, repurposing wood to create the interior décor, including a table fashioned from planks of oak almost as old as the building itself.
Upon entry, visitors are greeted by a service counter where they can order from a set daily menu of prepared food offerings as well as the store’s first of many home accents displays, featuring items such as wine accessories, dishware, canvas bags, and candles. Further into the store is a bar where mostly local breweries host periodic beer tastings, a refrigerator cases of over 60 craft beers and over 40 prepared foods, a variety of bulk food items, and a freezer full of desserts, including a sizable assortment of gluten-free offerings. The back of the store houses the centerpiece for gathering: A well-stocked wine bar featuring ceiling-high shelves of bottles.
Customers can order food at the counter, a glass of wine at the bar, and head out to the back patio, where local musicians play from 6:30-10 on Fridays and Saturdays. Music is performed rain or shine, so if it’s umbrella weather, grab a seat inside to take in the tunes.
What's Up Recommendation
Spread a blanket at Veterans Memorial Park and watch a spectacular sunset over East Grand Traverse Bay while enjoying an order of Cuban roasted pork—a garlic- and Latin spice-rubbed whole pork shoulder roasted for several hours—or a family-sized chicken pot pie full of white meat and vegetables—and, of course, a delicious slice of house-made ricotta cheesecake for dessert!
